Windows 2000/2003 DNS servers include a feature called Scavenging. The scavenging process, which is disabled by default, removes stale records from the database. Scavenging can be configured on a per-zone, per-server, or per-record basis. Keep in mind that if there is a record that is not dynamically updated and you end up configuring it for scavenging, that record will be deleted if it is not refreshed periodically.
Your concern on records of servers is covered in: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/en/server/help/default.asp?url=/WINDOWS 2000/en/server/help/sag_DNS_imp_ManageAgingScavenging.htm Cheers! We have machines that will get renamed or rebuilt, etc, and we don't want all these old records being left around. Yet we don't want all records to expire because then our servers with static IP addresses will disappear as well. How best to handle this situation?
