You will have noticed some problems recently with return receipts beings sent to the mailing list address. I can't do anything on the list side to block these, so I would like to issue a plea to all of you to not request any delivery or return receipts when posting to the list. The problem arises because of a lack of standard approach across different mail clients and servers. For example, if you use Outlook together with the Exchange 5.5. Internet Mail Service, whenever you request either a return receipt or delivery receipt when sending an email to an Internet recipient, the outbound SMTP message header contains something like the following: Return-Receipt-To: Tony Murray <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
This particular method is not supported by any RFC! The recommendation is therefore for users not to request any receipts when sending to the list as the results may not be reliable. For further information on the relevant RFCs see: http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2298.html http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1891.html Of course, if you are one of those sending return receipts to the list address please check to see if you have any configuration options to either a) suppress the automatic generation of the receipts, or b) send the receipt to the original message sender and not the Reply-To: address.
