If the DC is not configured as a GC you will not be able to log in unless you are using a domain admin account, or have implemented the registry hack to disable GC login requirement. We backed up our FSMO role holding domain controller including system state, dns, dhcp - all services that were on the box. We then restored it onto a server in our lab (in DSRestore mode and off the production network), and it restored OK, but it won't let us log into the domain - it's saying the domain isn't available (even though it's a domain controller we're trying to log into!)
