2000/2003 implementations still rely on an x500 address, the
legacyExchangeDN. Outlook still stores that address in address objects
within the messages. If you want to break the Reply function, change the
legacyExchangeDN. :)

On the other hand, knowing this means that if you need to change the
legacyExchangeDN value for some reason, you can work around it. Once you
change legacyExchangeDN to the new value, you can add an additional x500
type address to proxyAddresses that consists of the old value.
This can be useful in site/org consolidations, etc.

One thing that doesn't work that way though is folder permissions.
Folder permissions (like when you delegate rights for someone to read your
calendar) are tied to the legacyExchangeDN value also. They will not
resolve against a secondary x500 address, however.

After re-reading that, I should have added it's a method for defining a
cross-reference to an external directory as well. I'll try to be more
complete in the future - it's a new leaf I'm turning over ;)

It's possible they didn't know :)

X.500 is AKA PDN (parent distinguished name).

5.5 implementations (when Outlook was written) used X.400 transport and a
X.500-like directory. Using the X.500 address of the user on the target
migration system allows Outlook to resolve the originator's address in most
cases.

This KB helps to explain how it gets derived and what it means to OL/cached
mode.
