I can think of a few reasons you might not want the HOSTS file to be overwritten every time - if you had to modify individual files for some good reason, for example (I know at least two enterprises that still use HOSTS files for mainframe access configuration...ah well...) so it might be a good idea to script a little bit around the copy command.

Typically you would drop another flag file or even pop a value into the registry after your first copy.

The script logic then goes something like:

Check for the flag, if it exists the loop
No flag you get to the copy command
No flag, check the copy succeeds, then drop the flag file

Anyhow, I always like the ability to go back afterward and see what level of success my script had, and the flag can be used for this purpose as well.

My 2 cents...Rick

Best way would be to write your script that copies it down from a central
source and set it as a Start Up Script via GPO. It would get run every time
the client starts and run in the System Context, as opposed to a logon
script which runs in the user context.

You asked:-

Is it possible to modify each client's HOSTS file via Group Policy? If so,
how is this done?

Not that this answers your question but an alternat way to update the hosts
file could be via a login script which copies the hosts file you want on all
workstations from a specified location to the clients location overriding
the existing hosts file.

Not sure I this helps or is a reasonable way for you to do this.

His wouldn't work as when clients connect to the internet, they use their
ISP dns server which points our AD domain name to some other host on the
Internet.

How about creating a host entry on your internal AD DNS server that points
to your company web site, or any other
site:
your Forward lookup zone = yourcompany.com host record www 1.1.1.1 (ip
address of your web site) This should work since your internal DNS server
is authorative for yourcompany.com and the client machines use your DNS
servers for name resolution
