I have experienced similar situation where couple of xp clients just couldn't connect to the server on times. Norton AV turned out to be a culprit in my situation. The xp machines were running a very old copy of Norton Anti Virus. Some Windows XP machines cannot access the shares from time to time. You can't event ping the server when this happens. It does not happen all the time.  The other 2 servers in AD never have the problem. A reboot of the server normally fixes the problem.
