I tink it's time to bring out Winternal's ERD Commander or similar tool. I
don't know if Winternals has a trial version, but if you have it, you should
be able to boot all the way into the OS and start the necessary service.
 
Perhaps you could also try machinename\administrator at the logon prompt if
you can't get the drop-down to work. Never tried it, but hey.....

Its not joined to a domain. It's in its own workgroup, so I don't think this
is a DNS thing. The dropdown is flat out empty - no local machine, no domain,
none of that.

How would I go about logging in with the SYSTEM account? I've never tried to
do such a thing - didn't know it was possible.
