Because VS2005 wasn't designed for intensive I/O, CPU or RAM systems.
VS2005 has on average a 35-45% overhead on the host machine, because
of the Host OS. Also, all VM's are running in Emulated Mode on the
CPU. VMware would be better suited for your need of Exchange running
within a VM.

VS2005 doesn't offer the same performance enhancements VMware ESX
server can, and GSX server for that matter. Ok, GSX doesn't offer
CPU resource throttling, like VS2005. But, I would rather spend the
extra money for GSX, and have a more stable virtualization platform
than VS/VPC 2005.

Chris

Virtual Server 2005 - whitepaper)

OK, I finally got around to reading this (to avoid writing -
hehehehe) and it's really rather over my head.

So, therefore, let's change the topic! :-) Why isn't Exchange
supported in a VM? I figure it's gotta be something related....(and
yes, I asked this of my Exchange contacts and didn't get any answers
other than "I/O intense operations").

I was chatting with ~Eric about this doc last night, if anyone finds
any issues with it, pop them on the list here so we can get it all
fed back up the chain.

                FYI - interesting Whitepaper:

- -4209-8ED2-E261A117FC6B&displaylang=en

this is the first step to "branch office DC" running on a
multi-purpose server:
"With strict adherence to requirements described in this paper,
domain controller virtual machines can also be used in production."

so now it will be supported even prior to Longhorn ;-)
