You missed nothing. It is just a well-hidden bug. Quote from KB819106:

"The Windows 95-based DFS client can only negotiate referrals to other
SMB (Server Message Block) volumes, such as those that are hosted by
Microsoft Windows NT or by Windows 95. All other volumes, such as NFS
and NetWare, will appear as empty directories to the Windows 95-based
DFS client. Windows NT does not have this limitation. This limitation of
Windows 95 is stated in the DFS client readme file."

The same applies to W98, presumably. A long shot could be to install the
dsclient, since that makes some changes to the DFS client functionality.

Subject: [ActiveDir] DFS & NOVELL

Hi Everyone,

For the migration of data from Novell File servers to Windows File
Servers I'm using DFS

I have set up a stand-alone DFS root <file:///\\SERVER\DATA$\>
\\SERVER\DATA$\

For each Novell server with data I have created a DFS link under the DFS
root called LOCATION-<Location CODE> which is Linked to

 <file:///\\NOVELLSERVER\VOLUME\DIR> \\NOVELLSERVER\VOLUME\DIR

For one of the Windows File Servers I have created a DFS link under the
DFS root called LINKS which is Linked to
<file:///\\WINDOWSSERVER\LINKS$> \\WINDOWSSERVER\LINKS$

Now the problem:
When I connect to the DFS root with a WXP or W2K3 client with the Novell
Client installed I'm able to access the data under the DFS link for the
Windows server and for the Novell servers. No problem at all.

When I connect to the DFS root with a W95 or W98 client with the Novell
Client installed I'm able to access the data under the DFS link for the
Windows server BUT NOT the Novell servers. Thus I'm NOT able to connect
to <file:///\\SERVER\DATA$\Location-%3cLocation-CODE%3e\>
\\SERVER\DATA$\Location-<Location-CODE>\, but I'm able to connect to
<file:///\\NOVELLSERVER\VOLUME\DIR> \\NOVELLSERVER\VOLUME\DIR

What am I missing?

Groet,
Jorge

Remark: all names are examples

Met vriendelijke groet / Kind regards,
