Domain Rename has actually evolved and matured since those initial days. It's easier and better thought-through now. Having said that, it is NOT easy and I agree that it should be on the tail end of your alternatives. As to your question regarding ADMT, ADMT will migrate your computer accounts very well. It will disjoin them from your current domain and join them to your new domain. It will reboot the computers to complete the process. However, the process is not seamless, the failure rate is (in my experience) about 10%. This rate climbs up to 75% if you have Windows XP SP2 in the mix and your network is subnetted. This is primarily because ADMT uses agents to do its migration voodoo. SP2 blocks unsolicited traffic, and when you allow unsolicited traffic, the scope defaults to allowing only from the computer's subnet. So, what then happens is that your agents don't get dispatched and migrations fail with a lot of "RPC not available" errors (or something along that line). So, if you are going to invest time and material on using ADMT and you have Windows XP clients with SP2, you will do yourself a whole lot of good by using GPO to centrally configure the Windows Firewall to allow the usual "File and Printer Sharing" ports (445, 139, 138, 137) and change the scope to cover your entire LAN subnets.
