Hi Neil, You could modify the 12-hour interval (of tombstone deletion and online defrag) to be seven days, for example, by modifying the garbageCollPeriod attribute of CN=Directory Service, CN=Windows NT, CN=Services, CN=Configuration, DC=yourforest. But not longer that 1/3 of the tombstone lifetime.
You could also trigger online defrag each night by writing to the doOnlineDefrag operational attribute (the duration of the defrag in seconds) to the rootDSE virtual object of a WS2003 DC. I haven' tested it, but the documentation says that by performing online defragmentation during off-peak hours, you can ensure more-even directory performance during peak hours. However, I don't know if manual triggering (often enough) prevents automatic completely, or will the automatic still start, but now it has less things to do, so less CPU usage during peak hours. (and if it would prevent automatic completely, what would happen to tombstone removal...). My guess is that the automatic still occurs, but now it has less things to do. See http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/WindowsServ/2003/all/techref/en-us/Default.asp?url=/Resources/Documentation/windowsserv/2003/all/techref/en-us/w2k3tr_adstr_how.asp and search for the attribute names I mentioned. I therefore have two questions, relating to the online defrag: 1. Behaviour I assume a DC performs an online defrag at boot and then every 12 hours thereafter. Is this correct? This implies that the schedule could be altered by simply rebooting the DC at an appropriate time [not elegant, admittedly!] 2. Scheduling Is it possible to change the schedule such that defrags are performed (twice daily) at specific times?
