Hi Jorge, (Sim, pode dizer Ol :-) )
I can't test it now, but i can answer some of your questions. The DNS name is TURMA.COM, so i'm not using a single label domain name.
The DC is running both WINS and DNS (which has been installed by the Active Directory Wizard). The clients are pointing to the DC as the DNS server, but not as the WINS server (could be this the reason????).
* Is the DC pointing to the IP address of the DNS server? * Is the DC pointing to the IP address of the WINS server?
I'm almost sure that the DC is pointing to itself as a DNS server, but not so sure about WINS.
The other things i can only answer monday night.
Thank you,
Joo Guerra

Hi Joo, (or can I say Ola) ;-)
Just to be sure...
Is the: DNS domain name: TURMA.COM or TURMA (if it is the latter then your using a single-lable DNS domain name and that's is not recommended! see MS-KBQ300684 http://support.microsoft.com/?id=300684) NetBIOS domain: TURMA
To check both logon to your DC with domain admin credentials, go to the command prompt and type: SET USERDNSDOMAIN (this should return your DNS domain name) SET USERDOMAIN (this should return your NetBIOS domain name)
If your DNS domain name is TURMA instead of TURMA.COM you can do 2 things: (1) keep the existing configurations and make additional configurations as mentioned in MS-KBQ300684 (not recommended) (2) de-install Active Directory and install AD again using the DNS domain name TURMA.COM and the NetBIOS domain name TURMA (this should be selected automagically when using dns domain name TURMA.COM). Point the DC to a server with DNS installed (hosting the zone TURMA.COM) or point to itself if DNS is installed on the DC. Point the DC to a server with WINS installed or point to itself if WINS is installed on the DC. Configure other settings accordingly and as needed
If your DNS domain name is TURMA.COM and NetBIOS is TURMA check the following: * run from the command prompt DCDIAG /V > DCDIAG_OUTPUT.TXT (DCDIAG is available from the support tools) mail DCDIAG_OUTPUT.TXT * run from the command prompt NETDIAG /V > NETDIAG_OUTPUT.TXT (NETDIAG is available from the support tools) mail NETDIAG_OUTPUT.TXT
ADDITIONAL THINGS YOU COULD CHECK YOURSELF (some of them will be answered by netdiag and/or dcdiag): * Do you have a DNS server hosting the zone TURMA.COM (can also be the DC with DNS installed and hosting the zone) * Do you have a WINS server (can also be the DC with WINS installed and hosting the zone) * Is the DC pointing to the IP address of the DNS server? * Is the DC pointing to the IP address of the WINS server? * Are the records as listed in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\NETLOGON.DNS registered in DNS? * Do you have a 1Ch record (Domain Controller) in WINS with the name of your netbios domain name
My guess is you're using a single lable dns domain name and your WINS configuration is not correct.
Tchau, Jorge

Hi, i'm new to this list, and i start by asking help about a problem that is bugging me.
In a classroom, i have a W2003 Server in which i installed Active Directory creating the turma.com domain.
turma.com domain isn't registered anywhere, it's only for the class activities.
The installation of Active Directory went fine, but i can't join clients to this domain, when i try to join the domain on Windows XP Pro clients i get this error:
------------------------------------------------------------ The domain name turma might be a NetBIOS domain name. If this is the
case,
verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS.
If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain name, then the following information can help you troubleshoot your DNS configuration.
The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain headquarters:
The error was: "DNS name does not exist." (error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)
The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.turma Common causes of this error include the following:
- The DNS SRV records required to locate a domain controller for the domain are not registered in DNS.
- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:
turma . (the root zone)

I already removed AD and installed it again with a new domain name and it still happens. What can i do to solve this? thank you
