Figured it out. under system properties in computer name, there was just a "." when i changed the name, all was good.
Of course, my question now is, why would the name be "." could it be a screw up during set up? In msinfo32, the copm name was the default name given by vendors. something like "compaqlong serial#". it was 14 char. thanks for all your help!!
