Additionally, is there a reason you would dcpromo it and then restore the system state? Do you need to maintain something from there? Some other applications that are running on the DC?
As Jorge mentions, that would be a good reason to backup the system drive as well. If you don't need this, then your restoration might be more than you need as well. Auth restores might be a different matter as well, but then it gets complicated. -ajm -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Jorge de Almeida Pinto Sent: Friday, June 03, 2005 9:07 AM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [ActiveDir] Backing Up Domain Controller Suggestions When backing up a DC you really only need to backup the system state of the DC. However, in my opinion the system drive and the system state belong together and thus I always advise to backup the system. Reason: custom configurations like directories/permissions/etc., installed apps, etc. When restoring a DC I would restore an image of a clean installed server and then restore the system drive and the system state. It seems to me that the system state is the only feasible backup needed from a DC. Does anyone know of any realistic uses for a SYSTEM DRIVE backup of a domain controller. If a DC crashes, I would just rebuild it from a member server image and then dcpromo it, and do a system state restore. I do not see any use in the SYSTEM DRIVE backup. Anybody out there have a yea or neigh in this matter?
