This calculation is determined by the following three MAPI properties on a message. If any one of these properties is less than the limit set by the Mailbox Manager rules, then we will skip that message.

- PR_MESSAGE_DELIVERY_TIME
- PR_CLIENT_SUBMIT_TIME
- PR_LAST_MODIFICATION_TIME

For the purpose of your policy you want it so that the calculation is determined on the PR_MESSAGE_DELIVERY_TIME property only. To do this follow these instructions.

Use ADSI Edit to edit the msExchMailboxManagerAgeLimit attribute on the Mailbox Manager recipient policy object.

Setting one of the following values on the msExchMailboxManagerAgeLimit attribute
You can find the msExchMailboxManagerAgeLimit attribute by opening the configuration container in adsiedit.msc and getting properties on the relative mailbox manager policy object: CN=%name_of_policy%,CN=Recipient Policies,CN=%orgname%,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=tree,DC=exchadmin,DC=com

When you set a value of 3, you can expect the following behavior in Exchange 5.5: (Exchange 5.5 behavior)
We examine both the submitted and the modified date properties on messages and purge messages that exceed either the modified or the submitted date properties.

Mailbox Manager does not delete messages if the delivery time is beyond the age limit

Subject: [ActiveDir] OT: Exchange Email Deletion Policy

Everyone,

We are setting up an email deletion policy at my organization.  I have tested and understand how the recipient policy works and the entire email deletion process works.  One thing that is a little confusing is the fact that the email deletion policy works off a hidden field for each item in a user’s mailbox that I will call modified date field.  Meaning if I copy a message into my mailbox that has a received time of over 30 days and the email deletion policy deletes anything it over 30 days the message does not get deleted.  I know this is because of the modified date field.  What I want to know is when does Exchange decide to change this date from the time it was created to a later date.  Is this based on a user moving a message to a new folder, replying, and forwarding?  I want to educate our help desk, users, etc. on what will be deleted and when and I cannot find any documentation on the internet that explains when and how the modified date is changed/updated.  TIA.

Jeremy
