Oh you can have some good at-home Cisco fun without spending that much. Http://house.briandesmond.com/GreenviewNetwork.pdf.
A 1700 with a Fast Ethernet interface is good enough to subinterface it and do vlan routing, acl the interfaces, ios firewall (has gotten more firewall-ish in 12.3T), ios vpn, etc. You can get an ADSL WIC for the thing and play with ATM interfaces Use that to terminate your home DSL line if you can figure out the circuit info. Setup NAT too. Only problem with 1700s is they need a crapload of memory to run one of the full featured images. --brian Thanks, Brian Desmond [EMAIL PROTECTED] c - 312.731.3132 -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Kern, Tom Sent: Sunday, July 24, 2005 3:43 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [ActiveDir] OT: new job I'm the latter. I have multiple networks running at home. If it weren't for VMware, my wife would throw me and my machines out already :) Before I had my current job about 4 years ago, I was running Netware 5 servers and NDS at home(why, I have no idea). I also have a couple of 1700 and 1900 cisco routers as well. Of course with stuff like Cisco, it gets a little more diffcult as to what you can do at home. Its diffcult and expensive to get access to switches/routers, unless your job has extra laying around they don't mind you using, and you're really limited to what you can emulate. Also, we all know that what you do at home is never an accurate mirror of what you see in the real world. My AD/Exchange servers at home run perfectly and I almost always know what the issue is if they don't. I wish I could say that for all of the jobs I'd worked at. I've seen errors I never even heard of before at work. Still, I see your point. IT is a passion of mine and I'd be screwing around with networks even if my day job was accounting or law. It would just be an expensive hobby then. That's why I always consider myself lucky that my job and source of income is also my hobby. Most people hate their jobs or are at best indifferent. I may not always like or agree with who I work for but I always love the work itself. I should stop worrying and acting so spoiled and appreciate how lucky I am.
