We ended up configuring Group Policy to grant modify rights to the directory listed in this article.  We got the hotfix from MS but it did not work.

Sounds like a driver problem to me as the driver runs in kernel mode and is almost certainly causing this protection fault.
I would check the version of the driver on the server and then look for a newer one at HP.
If that doesn't fix it substitute a PS driver for the PCL driver (or viceversa).
