[ActiveDir] Attribute Documentation

Is there any good documentation on AD attributes. The stuff at msdn.microsoft.com seems pretty useless to me (or maybe I just don’t have a clue what they are specifying). I need to know if attributes need to be specified, or if they are automatically populated (and if so, how or what criteria are used), or don’t need to be present when creating accounts.
