Hi Jaspreet, Exactly, right now you have 2 forests, with one domain each, but you want 1 forest with 2 domains in the end. Thats not going to be accomplished by just using the domain rename tools.
Someone else will be sure to correct me if I'm wrong, but I dont see another way on a Sunday to accomplish this task without using ADMT. The USMT aspect of this can be scripted to take care of easing the profile migration process. My advice would be: fire up the lab environment, and read some AD design documentation. Trying this out for yourself in a lab will make the real deal a lot smoother. Hope that helps, Tim ________________________________ From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] on behalf of Jaspreet Singh Jolly Sent: Sat 10/1/2005 10:13 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [ActiveDir] Domain Rename Issue Hi Tim, OS is Windows 2003. Functional Level is Windows 2000 Mixed Mode. Yes as i plan it when we rename XYZ.com to say 123.ABC.com number of domains in the forest would still remain same i.e 1 (one) as we dot have trust relationship between these domains and they are Standalone forests. After Renaming we want to create Trust relationship between ABC.com and 123.ABC.com. And i want to do this so that i dont have to use ADMT or USMT. If what i am planning is accomplished then we will not have to reconfigure user profiles which is the most difficult task in this whole exercise as all the users are of higher management and Profile migration for them is very critical. ( One more question after Domain Rename activity do we need to reconfigure the user profiles? As if we need to do that i will change the plan ). One of the contraints with renaming domains is you have to have the same number of domains in the forest in the end that you started out with. The way I read the question, you currently have 2 seperate domains you need to merge into a parent/child relationship. It seems to me you would want to create a new xyz.com domain as a child of the abc.com domain, and use the Active Directory Migration Tools (ADMT) to migrate the objects from the old xyz.com to the new child xyz.com domain. Can we use "Domain Rename" utility to Rename XYZ.com to "Child.ABC.com" and create a trust rlationship between these. Regards, Jaspreeet
