Guys, I'm sorry. I'm just not following this. Please answer these questions if possible;
[1] Nathaniel replicated the root domain to a new DC. Yet the DC in question held (at least) the SM and IM roles and probably all others as he could not add objects as Aric B pointed out. So ... where are the roles now and how did they get back to this DC when this is a new DC replicating from a source with no roles? [2] "Since this is the ROOT DC, is my forest going to die or corrupt slowly?" What would be the answer to this question assuming a time differential of "X" passed before an overworked Sys Admin noticed the failure? [3] How can Nathaniel be sure the System State was corrupted as opposed to some other root cause? Thanks in advance. These kinds of subject lines are always scary and I'm just trying to feel comfortable with the outcome. Hey all, Thanks for all of your suggestions. I ended up just doing a rebuild and replicate during the night. The statement about the RID master is probably correct, although I cannot remember since it was in 2001. I guess the lesson learned here is that Hardware Troubleshooting done by the hardware guys needs to be in synch with the concerns of the Sys Admins. It took 14 hours to rebuild everything and restore everything. I tried the method of building a vanilla server, and then restoring the system state, but with corrupted system state data, the latter method of rebuilding and replicating is the easiest way to go. Hello Nathaniel, What about the last known good bootoption (might work if you experience the bsod before logon)? Any other possibilities like save boot? If one of these work you can try to find the failing device, and get rid of the driver / whatever it needs to get it working again. What about checking the hardware, e.g. SCSI-controller? As others stated - is this your only forest root dc? If you are able to restore and you are certain that the hardware is OK you could try to restore, and then run a repair installation of windows over it. If that doesn't help try a restore of the systemstate on different hardware. If you have other forest root DCs than you can go ahead and seize the FSMOs, but I'd try above steps first. After you recovered make sure that you have more than one DC per domain.
