Add this to a batch file and then run
@Echo Off
Prompt $p$g
set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
start devmgmt.msc
exit
This should start the device manager and
show devices that are configured but not seen as present (as grey/gray icons) if
your sound card is listed but seen as not present I would try deleting the non
present devices and rebooting. Failing that I would runs some diagnostics on
the pc to check the hardware, got any yellow or red marks in the device manager
- the IRQ for the sound card make sure it’s not conflicting. 5, 10 or 15
used to be good.
Feel free to take this offline if you wish

I had the same problem. Bought a new pci sound
card, disabled the onboard and installed the drivers for the new X-Fi Card and
still no sound. The only thing that worked was an OS Repair or reinstall XP
Pro/Home.
