In addition to what Al mentioned:

Concerning the schema master and the domain naming master (run NETDOM QUERY FSMO to find out who the FSMO role owners are) they should be on a GC. If I remember correctly the domain naming master does not need to be on a GC when FFL = w2k3

Concerning the Infrastructure FSMO role and the GC role look at it from the domain perspective. If all DCs in a certain domain are GC then it does not matter the Infrastructure FSMO of that domain is on a GC. You don't have any other choice though. If you at least have one OTHER DC (besides the infrastructure master) in that same domain that is/will not be a GC then do not put the Infrastructure FSMO of that same domain on a GC. For more info on this read: MS-KBQ248047_Phantoms, Tombstones and the Infrastructure Master
Short and sweet rule of thumb:
No matter what forest structure you have for each domain the following rules
apply:
(1) If all DCs in a domain are GC, there is no other choice where to put the Infrastructure master. So no issue here!
(2) If at least one or more other DCs in a domain (besides the Infrastructure master) are not a GC, then the Infrastructure master should NOT be on a GC

cheers,
Jorge

Subject: Re: [ActiveDir] multiple catalog servers

It's a best practice to have more than one global catalog server enabled in your domain. If you have more than one domain in your forest, you want to read up about putting the GC on a role holder.

Is there a way to have multiple catalog servers?  I have a setup with multiple DC at multiple locations.  Everything works ok until the connectivity is lost between locations.  I was told that the issue is the machines can't find the catalog server.  Since I only have one, when connectivity is lost, it's as if the catalog server is down.  So the fix is to have multiple catalog servers, I think.  Does any one have any suggestions?
