Actually,

French and Spanish (and pretty much all the Romance Languages) have a
far more uniform pronounciation than English does.

For anyone who hasn't kill-filed this thread - I recommend Bill
Bryson's book 'Mother Tongue' - for an entertaining and informative
guide to the evolution of the English Language.
