That's a cruddy KB article. You don't need to do all that to fix the so called "links". There's another one which describes just making DS2MB rerun itself...Just have to change the USN in the metabase manually and then restart msexchangesa and wait for ds2mb to kick off.
If you follow that KB you should do an exchange setup /disasterrecovery anyway.
