Thanks, everybody. All advice was gratefully received and I ended up using
LWP::Simple as per Ron's suggestion. It even worked after I'd finished being
thick!

The LWP::Simple module:

 C:\>perldoc LWP::Simple

has a function called getstore() which takes a URL and a filename and
saves the URL to the specified file.
