Consider taking a look at Devel::Pointer on CPAN. There's a good chance it'll get you where you need to go.

The 'Data' in this instance is a Win32::OLE object and is not thread-safe.
Calling share($ole_obj) fubar's the contained reference.
This is why I was looking for another way for the child to explicitly access
the parents copy of the variable.
