I believe that was in older browser implementations (NS 3, IE 4). You can get many more than 255 characters now in the GET request. However, you may want to check browser limitations before you push the envelope too much.

GET normally has a 256 character limit, sometimes less. POST however
(theoretically) does not have such limits since the script receives the
info via standard input. However, you may run into other limitation
problems with either method.
