First - thanks, and I'm sure I'll check it out, but it still doesn't
help me with my portability problem (unless I decide that under Win32
I'll use your approach but under *nix I'll fork it and enjoy the true
semaphoring world...).

Second - will this ominous windows command that pops a dialogue will end
upon completion of the longer command execution that invoked it in the
first place?

The only thing I can think of is Win32::MsgBox(), but I seem to remember

that there was also a Windows command that would pop open a dialogue or 
informational box upon execution.  Hope this helps.
