WMI is installed by default on Win2K, WinXP and Windows 2003. It is part of the WBEM initiative to provide a common interface to the computer environment. If you go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&familyid=9ef05cbd-c1c5-41e7-9da8-212c414a7ab0 . Microsoft has provided a tool (called Scriptomatic) that you will provide WMI scripts that use WMI using _vbscript_, Perl, JScript, Python. There are classes such as Win32_Disk, Win32_DiskDrivePhysicalMedia, Win32_LogicalDisk, etc. , that should give you the details you will need. Also, http://cwashington.netreach.net/depo/view.asp?Index=818&ScriptType=perl has a sample script (Script using WMI to query computers for Logical Disk info, compute the amount of free space in MB and percent. Output file in HTML , option to display on screen or email the HTML file.).

WMI = Windows Management Instrumentation? We do not use such a package in our WIN2k server environments.
Unfortunately, rsh requires a server process running on the server, which can only be installed by the administrative team. Are there no packages offered through CPAN/Other?

You should be able to use WMI or some form of rsh (module or cmdline)
given the right perms to access the remote computer.
