Mr Raven et al- correct, i didn't understand fork until I ran the test script. if i had not used the test script, i think i would have poked more than just my eye out. i think i would have gotten a few other too...it's rather ameoba-like in its replication.....
as to the opening windows, i was told explicitly to use "start" in windows, which opens them, and figured the same was wanted on posix.
