The answer is in your message "If you want to the use the threads module, please contact the people who built your Perl". Presumably your sysadmins built Perl either with the obsolete threading model, or without threading enabled. You should ask them to rebuild Perl with 'ithreads' support, if you want to use threads and you really need 5.8.8, or perhaps use the Activestate distribution which I believe is normally built with ithreads enabled.
