Perl 5.8.8 has a bug in the threads module on Windows. In addition
ActivePerl 5.8.8.816 also introduced some other serious problems that
typically manifest themselves by hanging GUIs, or ignored signals.

To fix this situation we will be releasing ActivePerl 5.8.8.817 later
this week. That version will also include updated versions of the
threads and threads::shared modules that should no longer leak handles.

Please wait until 817 is released if you want to use threads with
Perl 5.8.8 on Windows.

Cheers,
-Jan
