Or am I misunderstanding something, here? <--------- Apparently I was, I just checked $#bytes after unpacking into @bytes in your sample program, and the array got all 98 bytes, not just the 96 that comprised the "divisible by 8" set. (Looks like this was a case where RTFM was not the way to go.)
