Storing the names of those 900 files in an Application variable may
speed this up a little bit because you won't have to use FSO every
time this page is called.

How many Application variables are you already utilizing?

They can be great, and actually, we use them en masse on our sites.
We never use any Session variables though.

To make this a bit more modular, take your VBScript function and put
it in a file like i_App_Filenames.asp and include that in your global.asa.

Then, any time you want to update that APP variable, just include that
.asp page and call the function. (Update it only if you know you need to)
