Greetings!
Your faculty senate's constitution/bylaws probably indicate that meetings will
be conducted according to the current edition of Robert's Rules of Order Newly
Revised (RONR) or something similar. According to RONR, 11th Ed., p. 45, "The
chair should not call for abstentions in taking a vote, since the number of
members who respond to such a call is meaningless. To "abstain" means not to
vote at all, and a member who makes no response if "abstentions" are called for
abstains just as much as one who responds to that effect."
The teller's (vote counter's) report should indicate the number of votes cast,
the number necessary for adoption, the number of votes for, the number of votes
against, and the number of illegal votes (improperly done so they are not
counted as for or against). Abstentions are not considered at all.

Subject: [acupa-l] Faculty abstention votes

Good morning colleagues,
Do you have policies, guidelines or other regarding faculty's vote of
abstention? My interest in particular relates to when voting on tenure. Are
abstention votes allowed, not allowed, do not count, or other?

Thanks for your help
