Here's the definitions of Data Steward and Data Custodian from the University Data Policies section of our Executive Policy Manual:
Data stewards have charge over University data and are responsible for its safekeeping. Each data steward is responsible, within the bounds of University data policy, for operational policies and procedures governing inquiry and download access, dissemination, usage, collection, maintenance, and protection of the data in a designated data area. The data steward is responsible for the definition and classification of data in that area as well as verifying its authenticity as needed. Documentation characterizing shared University data will be maintained and made available for University use. A data steward may delegate any or all of his/her data administration duties to another University administrator known as a data custodian, however the data steward retains ultimate responsibility. Part of the revision is to reassess the definitions of Stewardship roles as these are a source of confusion. A cursory review of other University policies reveals that there is not consistency on what a Data Steward (and other related roles like Data Trustee, Data Custodian) means across Higher Education. I would like to summarize the various definitions for our internal needs, as well as share the findings with the Higher Ed community, and I am asking for your help in this effort. I would appreciate it very much if list members with institutions who have a Data Management policy would send me ([email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>) the link to their Data Management Policy. In about a month I will repost observations on Data Stewardship role definitions to the list. Thank you, Dave Huth University of Utah Enterprise Data Archtiect ATTN: Please be aware that when you respond to an ACUPA-L e-mail, the reply will be distributed to the ENTIRE e-listing of members.
