Theresa: At the University of Utah, this issue is treated as part of the Code
of Faculty Rights and Responsibilities, through a section which prescribes
faculty members' "Duties to Students"-- including a specific duty with regard
to what are referred to as "self-authored course materials" and using the
concept described as "FACULTY FINANCIAL INTEREST IN SELECTION OF COURSE
MATERIALS"
The legislative history for that provision is at
http://regulations.utah.edu/academics/appendices_6/6-316R8%20_Legislative%20history.pdf
and the overall Policy in which this section is located is at
http://regulations.utah.edu/academics/6-316.php Part 4-B-10 , search for
terms "Self-authored course materials"

Basically, the Policy prohibits a course instructor from deriving any financial
benefit from assigning students to buy course materials authored by that course
instructor. If it is a commercially published material, such that the publisher
pays royalties to the author/course instructor for each purchase made by
students, then the instructor must donate to a charitable entity (e.g., a
scholarship fund) an amount equivalent to the royalties the instructor is
receiving from the publisher.

Hi Theresa,

The University of Washington currently approaches this issue through an “Ethics
Advisory<http://f2.washington.edu/audit/sites/default/files/UW%20Internal%20Audit%20Ethics%20Advisory%20No.%201.pdf>.”

My best,

Subject: [acupa-l] Use of Teaching Materials Authored by Instructors

Hi,
I am seeking copies of policies for materials authored by instructors. We are
concerned about quality language that is broad, covering textbooks, mobile
apps, web sites, and such. We would like language that covers prohibiting or
controlling having students pay for a faculty authored text or app.

Thanks

Theresa Rowe
