We don’t have an official policy outlining this specific method, as you know.
We (I) disallow this method because of PCI Compliance issues. Raquel had
forwarded me a request from one of their clubs a year or so ago and the student
was going to deposit the funds in their own account and transfer to Western.
So, aside from the PCI issues we also have a plethora of other issues. It
isn’t so much the Square or similar devices but the phone or tablet they are
running these on – when credit cards are run on devices that allow any kind of
internet traffic through it, the chance of the credit card information being
compromised is great. There is even concern over a secure WiFi connection.

PayPal accounts – YUCK! There are control issues over the bank information
here.

We are working on a PCI compliant way to do this for the whole University. It
is a great need!

Yes, I’d be interested in what other Universities have to say.

Becky

I thought this was an interesting question. Do you want me to forward you the
responses from other institutions?

Does anyone have a policy or control guidelines that allow students to use
credit card readers for phones or tablet devices and/or PayPal accounts for
their Club fundraising events? If so, have you experienced any challenges with
it? If not, what is your reason for disallowing them?

Thank you in advance for any information you can provide.
