Many of the comments were similar to each other, and only a very few were conflicting. All of the comments were carefully considered, and immediately below is the final product. I will remind you that the committee determined that a vision statement was unnecessary. Below the mission and values statements is a summary of some of the thinking that went into the decisions that were made. Mission To advance the discipline of policy management, with a focus on higher education. Values Professionalism Demonstrate integrity, respect, and collegiality Collaboration Share knowledge and ideas for policy development and management Innovation Promote new solutions for managing policies Education Foster learning among policy professionals Comments from Mission and Values Subcommittee Mission: There were two comments on the focus of the mission and values statement, expressing the sentiment that we are only for higher education professionals. The group (as well as the board of directors) have discussed this at length. Those of us with many years of experience have seen that government agencies, not-for-profit entities, and even corporations that are developing central policy initiatives sometimes have benefitted greatly from membership, as well as from our resources. These words were chosen very deliberately to keep the focus on higher education while expressing ACUPA's broader appeal. You'll notice that in the values, higher education is not even mentioned. This, too, was deliberate, and for the same reasons. One person suggested changing the term "discipline," But the group felt that this was the most appropriate term to describe the subject. Values, general: * We changed the order of the values to accommodate your comments. Collaboration: * Many wanted to add the word "knowledge." We agreed this reads better. * Several of you thought "integrity" should come before "respect." We made this change. Professionalism: * Many of you did not like the word "behave." We agreed that "demonstrate" is better, and that's the one most of you suggested. Innovation: * There was one suggestion to remove the word "new." The group believes that innovation implies newness, and that existing solutions, while extremely important, would be covered under the separate "Collaboration" value: "Collaboration" is sharing what we know; "Innovation" is thinking of new solutions. Education: * No changes were suggested There may have been a few other small grammatical changes that you will see reflected in the updated materials. Again, we thank you for your excellent input.
