Many thanks to everyone for the responses! Armed with your information I contacted the individual and offered to assist if he would share the text of this "nefarious NSF requirement."
I kid, of course. I did offer my assistance though, and received this reply. "It is a gender study with NSF, and what I was told is that they were looking at the HOP to see if specific gender usages (the word he or she specifically) were being used rather than non-gender references (instructor, professor, administrator, etc.)" Funny how stories change, isn't it?
