Hello Jen,

Similarly, UC San Diego’s Smoke Free Policy states:

Exceptions to the Smoke and Tobacco-free policy may be granted for the purpose
of

• research studies if they adhere to any applicable EH&S health and
safety guidelines and (as applicable) are approved by the UC San Diego
Institutional Review Board or the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
and

• ceremonial use at the UC San Diego campus and other UC San Diego
Owned or Leased Property with prior approval of the sponsoring department and
the Fire Marshal’s Office.

Subject: Re: [acupa-l] Ceremonial Use of Sacred/Traditional Medicines

Hi Jen,
The only thing we have that covers this at all is our Smoke-Free. Here is the
exception:

· Tobacco use as part of a traditional Native American spiritual or
cultural ceremony is permitted without prior approval. To ensure that
ceremonies held indoors do not inadvertently activate fire alarms or sprinkler
systems, event organizers must follow the attached procedures.

Greetings:

UND is looking to update its policy on the ceremonial use of sacred/traditional
medicines (formerly known as spiritual use of sage, sweetgrass and cedar). If
your institution has a policy that you are willing to share, please pass it
along. Thanks in advance.

All the best,

JEN
