Dear Friends,

You are invited to Messages From The Co-op: British Avant-garde Film 1967-76,
an evening of British avant-garde 16mm film, 7pm, Wednesday 31 March & Thursday
1 April.

The London Film-Makers’ Co-operative was established in 1966. It was an
artist-led organisation that provided a forum for screenings, workshops, film
processing and distribution. Many of the films screened at the Co-op were
reactions against the perceived 'illusionism' of Hollywood, and instead
foreground the physical substances of the film medium. Other works undercut
audience expectations of documentary realism with clever twists of humour,
repetition and duration. Messages from the Co-op presents classic works by Guy
Sherwin, Marilyn Halford, Malcolm Le Grice, John Smith, Peter Gidal and David
Crosswaite. Most of these films have never been seen in New Zealand.

This programme is presented in collaboration with The Adam Art Gallery and
their installation Anthony McCall: Drawing with Light. The programme collects
several films which embody the critical and creative spirit of Anthony McCall
and his contemporaries, and has been brought to New Zealand courtesy of Lux,
London.
