News Release

For Immediate Release

Save the western Weald - sign the online petition

South Downs Campaign urges public to let their views be known

The South Downs Campaign (SDC) [1] is urging the public to let the government
know the strength of feeling about the exclusion of the western Weald
(including Petersfield, Liss, Midhurst and Petworth) from the South Downs
National Park. The Campaign has set up an online petition on the Prime
Minister's website at: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/western-weald/
<http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/western-weald/> which urges the Prime Minister to
include the western Weald in the South Downs National Park [2].

After only a few days the petition has already attracted over 200 signatures
but if the Government is really going to sit up and take notice thousands will
need to sign it. That is why the Campaign is urging the wider public to get
involved. The Campaign has also printed 20,000 leaflets [3] urging people to
write to the new Minister in charge of national parks, Jonathan Shaw MP [4] and
will be distributing them in the western Weald area over the next few weeks
[5]. The leaflet is also available online at the Campaign's website:
www.southdownscampaign.org.uk <http://www.southdownscampaign.org.uk/> .

Robin Crane CBE, chairman of the South Downs Campaign said:

"If people care about the future of this area then they need to let their views
be known. Otherwise places like Midhurst, Petworth, Petersfield and Liss will
be left out in the cold when the national park is established. Now more than
ever we need people to fight for their countryside. Sign our petition: get
your friends, neighbours, work colleagues and relatives to sign as well. That
way the government will be left in no doubt as to the strength of public
support for the inclusion of the western Weald in the South Downs National
Park."

request. The SDC is generously supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.

[2] The petition went live last week and ends on 9 January 2008. It states:
"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to include the western Weald in
the South Downs National Park"
