Inspired as I was by Sarah's plea I signed the pledge and forwarded the RSPB
message to friends, here is the response of one of them - do check out the link.

"I am now teaching a course on the role of bioscience and society (like GM,
biofuels etc) and it has made me aware of not answering every e-mail in case of
mis-quoting.

In relation to biofuels can I urge you to check out the slap-head on You-Tube
extolling the virtues of biofuels from agricultural wastes.

The idea of this to use the wastes for fuel and then this does not impact on
food production. I could go on my soap-box now, and I can’t resist.

I do think the single issue pressure groups (like RSPB) have got to get a grip.
The facts are that the world is running out of resources and nobody wants to
take responsibility to consume less. Where are the fuel and materials going to
come in a sustainable manner. Agriculture is one part of that future formula,
windmills are probably another, and maybe wave-power and even nuclear. There
are pressure groups that object to all alternatives for energy, but none are
identifying where it might come from or saying how we will identify the poor
buggers who should be turned off in the future."
