Chalk Grassland Workshops - Learn About the Restoration of Chalk Grassland which is so important for butterflies. Saturday 25th June and Wednesday 20th July Steyning Athletics Club, 25 Charlton Street, Steyning, BN44 3LE The Dukes of Steyning Project aims to create habitat for the threatened Duke of Burgundy butterfly on an area of the South Downs managed by the Steyning Downland Scheme. Like many butterflies the Duke requires a specific habitat and this can be found on chalk downland. This workshop will look at Sussex geology, soils, downland management history and introduce principles of downland ecology and restoration management. There will be a field visit to parts of the Steyning Downland Scheme to discuss chalk grassland restoration, botanical monitoring including use of positive and negative indicator species, and to look at habitat management.
