Kenyataan Media/ Media Statement Parti Keadilan Rakyat (Keadilan) (People�s Justice Party) 29hb Oktober 2004 KEADILAN CONDEMNS KILLING IN SOUTH THAILAND Parti Keadilan Rakyat condemns the Thai military for being responsible for the death of 84 Southern Thai Muslims in Narathiwat. It is shocking that Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra at the beginning praised the firmness of the military and blamed the deaths on the weakness of the dead owing to fasting, although he later retracted and apologized for his uncalled for remarks. I am reliably informed that more than 20 persons were shot dead when the demonstrators were trapped between the police station and the river behind it, after the front gate of the station was locked. About 1300 of the demonstrators were detained and they were tied and dumped one above the other in only eight military trucks. I am also informed that there was an attempt at the beginning by representatives of the demonstrators to negotiate with the police. But soon afterwards, the commander who was responsible for storming the Krisek mosque and killing innocent people there a few month ago, and who was supposed to have been suspended, was called in to handle thesituation at Narathiwat. That was when the �firmness of the military� began. Under the premiership of Thaksin, a very wealthy businessman who was a lieutenant- colonel in the Thai police force, the Thai central government and army have become more repressive in Southern Thailand. This does not augur well for peace and democracy in Thailand, which may have adverse effect on the ASEAN region as a whole. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ KEDILAN KUTUK PEMBUNUHAN DI SELATAN THAI Parti Keadilan Rakyat mengutuk tindakan tentera Thai yang mengakibatkan kematian 84 orang Muslim Thai di Narathiwat. Sangat memernjatkan bahawa Perdana Menteri Taksin Shinawatra pada mulanya memuji ketegasan tentera dan menyalahkan puasa sebagai punca kematian, walaupun beliau kemudiannya menarik balik kata-kata tidak wajar ini dan meminta maaf. Saya diberitahu oleh ssumber dipercyayai bahawa lebih 20 orang telah ditembak mati apabila penunjuk perasaan terperangkap di antara stesen polis dengan sungai di belakangnya, setelah pintu pagar stesen dikunci. Kira-kira 1300 orang telah ditahan dan mereka disumbat bertimbun ke dalam hanya lapan buah trak tentera. Saya juga diberitahu bahawa ada percubaan oleh wakil-wakil penunjuk perasaan mula-mula untuk berunding dengan pihak polis. Tidak lama kemudian, pegawai pemerintah, yang telah digantung selepas bertanggung jawab menyerang masjid Kerisik serta membunuh para jemaah di sana beberapa bulan lalu, telah dipanggil ke Narathiwat untuk menangani keadaan. Selepas itulah �tindakan tegas tentera � bermula. Di bawah Perdana Menteri Thaksin, seorang mahajutawan yang pernah menjadi leftenan kolonel dalam pasukan polis Thai, Kerajaan Pusat bertambah zalim di Selatan Thailand. Ini membawa petanda yang buruk kepada keamanan dan demokrasi di Thailand, yang boleh menjejaskan keadaan di rantau ASEAN seluruhnya.
