Alumni: Retain our heritage

BY GAVIN GOMEZ

PETALING JAYA: Changes made to the names of SK Assunta 1's sports
houses and colour of its school tie have sparked off strong reactions
from the school's alumni and others who want the ethos and character
of the school to be preserved.

"These colours and names make up the Assunta family identity and
character since the school was founded in 1955. The Assunta school
colours brown and white are in sync with our school song, sung
through generations.

"Changing colours will affect our school song, identity and spirit,"
said former student Pat Lu in an online petition signed by 564 (as at
5pm yesterday) Assuntarians and members of the public since it was
posted online 10 days ago.

The names of the sports houses have been changed from Assunta, Clare,
Francis and Hermine to Wira, Samudera, Buana and Suria, while the
traditional brown and white school ties have been changed to maroon
ones.

The petition is being compiled to be presented to Education Minister
Datuk Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.

Lu added in the petition: "We seek your assistance to maintain our
Assunta traditions by employing school heads who respect and have a
better understanding of the concept of mission school heritage."

Former education director-general Tan Sri Abdul Rafie Mahat had said
last year that school heads must respect the ethos and character of
mission schools, and not act indiscriminately -

The names of the sports houses were changed a few years ago while the
school tie was changed late last year.

When asked why the issue was being raised now, Lu said the alumni
were not aware of the changes until recently.

Sources reveal that the Assunta alumni association was invited to
join the school board only two years ago and then became aware of the
change in some of the school's traditions.

Headmistress Anum Zakiah Gam, who took over the post this year, said
she would contact the Selangor State Education Department for advice
on the matter.
