Statement CITIZENS CALL FOR A
DEMOCRATIC UN
On 13
September 2005 The JUST
initiated signature campaign took the position that the Secretary Generals
Report had failed to address the critical shortcomings in the UN power structure
and had instead sought to reinforce prevailing iniquities. Hence the three
demands of the campaign---1) No to Preemptive strikes 2) No to the Veto
and 3) Yes to the Empowerment of the General
Assembly. Though
the number of endorsements is modest, JUST is satisfied with the outcome of the
campaign. Considering that neither the mainstream nor the alternative
media gave any coverage to the campaign which was conducted through group
contact and the internet, we are pleased with the public response. In this
regard, JUST would like to record its profound appreciation of the efforts of
the Catholic Office for Human Development (OHD), This
quest will continue --- even though genuine UN reform remains a mirage. JUST and
its friends realize that the struggle for global justice will take a long while.
What is needed is patience and perseverance. Dr.
Chandra Muzaffar, President, International Movement for a Just World
(JUST). 21
September
2005.
