CITIZENS  CALL  FOR  A  DEMOCRATIC  UN

On 13 September 2005, a global citizens’ petition for a democratic United Nations was submitted to the UN Secretary General.  The petition, coordinated by the International Movement for a Just World (JUST), was endorsed by 5,743 individuals and groups from 86 countries.  It was the end result of a brief three month campaign, from 7 June to 7 September 2005, prompted by the Secretary General’s Report on UN Reform announced in March this year.

The JUST initiated signature campaign took the position that the Secretary General’s Report had failed to address the critical shortcomings in the UN power structure and had instead sought to reinforce prevailing iniquities. Hence the three demands of the campaign---1) No to Preemptive strikes  2) No to the Veto and  3) Yes to the Empowerment of the General Assembly.

Though the number of endorsements is modest, JUST is satisfied with the outcome of the campaign.  Considering that neither the mainstream nor the alternative media gave any coverage to the campaign which was conducted through group contact and the internet, we are pleased with the public response.  In this regard, JUST would like to record its profound appreciation of the efforts of the Catholic Office for Human Development (OHD), Malaysia, the Buddhist Soka Gakkai, Malaysia and the Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM).  Their cooperation with the multi-religious JUST is proof of the importance of inter-religious solidarity in the quest for global democracy and global justice.

This quest will continue --- even though genuine UN reform remains a mirage. JUST and its friends realize that the struggle for global justice will take a long while. What is needed is patience and perseverance.
