THANE: The three months of hard labour inside the *Karachi Landhi
jail*<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Karachi-Landhi-jail>has turned
24-year-old
*Jitesh Sinwar
Thakrya*<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Jitesh-Sinwar-Thakrya>into a
new man. The adivasi from Aswali village in Dahanu taluka of Thane
district has vowed to always stick close to his three children and wife,
and most certainly never to work on trawlers fishing in international
waters.

"Everything was so uncertain and so fearful then. The three months in the
Pakistan prison was an eye-opener. Inside the jail, the humiliation and
beatings by the authorities was something that we had got used to. The hard
labour jobs of digging with a iron rod or pulling out five-feet-long grass
with naked hands were assigned to us Indian prisoners. No brief rest is
allowed during the job and if we dare stop, the authorites rain blows on
us," said Thakrya, who was among the 45 Indian fisherman who were released
by Pakistan in May.

The lanky adivasi lad, however, is thankful that his ordeal ended in just
three months, unlike the 337-odd Indian fisherman from Maharashtar, Gujarat
and Daman, who have been holed up inside three specially-constructed
barracks for prisoners from across the border for years. Thakrya is among
the hundreds of adivasi youths from the tribal parts of Thane who are lured
to Porbandar or Veraval ports to work as sailors on privately-owned fishing
trawlers, promising them ample food and a monthly salary of Rs 5,000.

"Our trawler Akashdeep was sailing inside the Indian territory on January
19, 2013, when suddenly a Pakistan navy's speed boat came rushing towards
us. Without any warning the armed men landed inside our trawler and started
beating us. They said we had ventured into Pakistan waters when we were
very much in our territory. Our chief who was maneuvering the trawler was
beaten with a pipe. They ransacked and destroyed the make-shift shelter
made for us sailors and pushed us in their vessel. As many as five trawlers
with 27 fishermen were taken to the Karachi port," Thakrya said

After two days in the jail at the Karachi port, all the 27 Indian prisoners
were taken to the Karachi Landhi jail were their ordeal began. "They would
make us do all the tough work and one jail official would monitor it. I was
made to pull out five-feet long grass with my hands and when I pointed out
the blood-soaked hands and asked for a sickle they just refused. During the
summer, we were made to dig the earth till noon and if we dared rest the
official would hit us," he said.

Thakrya and the 27 fisherman arrested along with him were given the release
order by a *Karachi
court*<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Karachi-court>after their
captain one Samji pointed out the harassment and beatings by
the jail officials. "He pulled out his shirt and showed the marks on his
body and the court immediately ordered our release. We were driven to the
Wagah border and from there we reached Baroda where our owner Dileep Jungi
gave me my salary of Rs 2,000 and I returned home to my family," Thakrya
told TOI.

Local BJP MLA Chintaman Vanga said there are thousands of adivasi youths
who are locked up in the Pakistan prison and that the government should
give a subsistence allowance to their families and post-release the
innocent victim should be given a decent rehabilitation package to start a
new life.
