Tribal festival Medaram Jatara begins today Medaram (Warangal): Asia's biggest tribal biennial fair Sammakka-Saralamma Jatara will begin at Medaram village on Wednesday .The fair will conclude on February 20. Lakhs of people from Telangana, AP , Odisha, MP and Chhattisgarh participate in the four-day event, which is being observed as a state festival by the Telangana government. Incidentally , this is the first Sammakka-Saralamma Jatara after the formation of the new Telangana state.
Saralamma, the daughter of Sammakka, will arrive from Kannepally village on Wednesday along with Pagididderaju and Govindaraju, heralding the beginning of the fair. Tribal priests will perform special rituals to goddess Saralamma and put the deity on a platform. On Thursday , Sammakka will arrive at the platform from Chilukalagutta late in the night.After the arrival of the deity , lakhs of pilgrims will offer jaggery (locally called Bangaram or gold) blocks to Sammakka and Saralamma.Sammakka-Saralamma will stay on the platform for the darshan. About one crore pilgrims will offer prayers to the deities.
